Create opportunities for your child to explore two-dimensional (2D) shapes through open-ended play: building, balancing, rotating, sorting, stacking, tracing, stamping into playdough, making new shapes and more. Suitable for ages 3 and beyond (see below), these beautiful, handmade wooden 2D shapes have been thoughtfully designed to enhance children's understanding of early geometry. Plus, they are environmentally sustainable and a great alternative to throw-away plastic toys.
The set has been designed by Elle Collective and lovingly manufactured by the small business, Wooden Kidspiration, in Perth. Both Jarrah & Spotted Gum timbers used in making this product are locally and sustainably sourced.
Large size, perfect for little hands to grab & engage
Each shape is a two-piece puzzle, which allows children to learn what two piecescombine to make a single shape, or create their own shapes
Mix ‘n’ match your pieces to create new 2D shapes such as parallelograms, kites, isosceles triangles, rhombuses & trapeziums
Lines of symmetry are discovered;as children stack & match shapes, they learnthat regular 2D shapes have at least one line of symmetry
Made from hardwood timbers, making them durable & perfect robust play. Other wooden toys made from soft woods (such as pine) are more likely to dent & split).
A mix of timbers is used to create interest & assist young children in piecing together each shape
Non-rounded edges & corners, so children can physically feel these obvious features
Sanded to perfection, to ensure safe play
Finished with a non-toxic oil to enhance the lifetime of the shapes

WHAT TO CHILDREN LEARN ABOUT SHAPES AND WHEN?
From the age of 3, most children will be able to identify a range of two-dimensional shapes. At around the age of 5, children will begin to sort, describe and name 2D shapes.Between ages 6 and 9, children will draw, compareandidentify specific features of 2D shapes(e.g.,number of corners, edges, sides and lines of symmetry). Our wooden shapes are designed to facilitate learning through all these stages.
